Welcome to Part 2 of my favorites of all time! This month is ✨characters✨. I love creating characters; I've heard people say that each character a writer creates is a part of them. I know that applies to me!
Like last month, I am going to start from 5 and work my way back down to 1- just to make y'all wait a little while longer for my #1! Most of these people you have probably heard of, but they deserve mention nonetheless. I am sure there are hundreds of other characters that are absolutely amazing, but off the top of my head, these are some of my favorites. I'm not gonna lie, they are probably just the characters that remind me most of myself. But there's nothing wrong with that, right? These are all female characters, so I definitely have to have a male characters post sometime in the future, but in the meantime, here are my top 5 girl characters...
5. Lucy and Susan Pevensie
You might not recognize the names, but you'll probably recognize the book series they're in: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Most notably (by me, anyway) they show up in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. (And yes, you probably assumed that I would have only one character for each number. But these two girls are too great to only pick one.)
Lucy is your typical curious little girl. She reminds me a little bit of Ramona Quimby, but a lot less annoying. She is sweet and full of kindness, and if we're being honest, her curiosity is the reason the rest of her brothers and sisters got to Narnia in the first place. I love how humble and giving she is, and I think she is the character that everyone just falls in love with at the beginning. She's not perfect, but in reality, no character (or person) is truly perfect.
Susan is Lucy's older sister by four years (Lucy is eight at the beginning of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Susan is twelve) and is one of best big sisters ever. She is protective of her siblings, brave, and even though she is skeptical of Narnia at first, eventually embraces that there is indeed a world inside of a wardrobe. I love her because she reminds me of myself. She is logical (sometimes to the point of being stubborn) and motherly to both Edmund and Lucy.
"I think – I don’t know – but I think I could be brave enough.” -Lucy Pevensie, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
"And Susan grew into a tall and gracious woman with black hair that fell almost to her feet and the kings of the countries beyond the sea began to send ambassadors asking for her hand in marriage. And she was called Queen Susan the Gentle." -Susan Pevensie, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
4. Katniss Everdeen
Katniss is the protagonist and female heroine of The Hunger Games. She is brave and athletic. One of the reasons I love her so much is because of how in the midst of The Hunger Games, when she is steps away from death, she pushes through and saves herself as well as her fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark. Katniss is definitely a rebel, and is at the frontlines of the rebellion in Panem. She is caring, as well as willing to sacrifice herself for her friends. If you haven't read the Hunger Games, I strongly encourage you to try it out. (I wrote about it in my previous post about my favorite authors.) She is so courageous, and encouraging to all of us who need to a little bit more courage in our lives.
“Because that’s what you and I do. Protect each other.” -Katniss Everdeen, Mockingjay
3. Annabeth Chase
Annabeth is a lot like both Susan Pevensie and Katniss Everdeen, as she is intelligent and logical, as well as brave. She is in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as the follow-up series Heroes of Olympus. She also makes a few appearances in Magnus Chase & the Gods of Asgard. She is the daughter of Athena, and so is super smart. I like her because of how logical she is, seeing all sides of a situation- and she always has a plan! And she's pretty sarcastic, especially with Percy, which is great too. Annabeth is prepared for everything, but still likes to let loose and have fun once in a while. She is talented too- one of my favorite scenes is when she judo-flips her boyfriend. Ha!
“Percy, explaining things to you is like lecturing a gerbil.” -Annabeth Chase, The Crown of Ptolemy
2. Hermione Granger
I love Hermione so much. She is like me as a fictional character, from the brown hair to the obsession with books. Obviously, there are some differences, but personality wise we are very much alike. I could go on and on about her; but one of my favorite things is how willing she is to help out her friends. Harry Potter gets into some crazy dangerous situations, and she is always there and has his back. I am a firm believer in the fact that, without Hermione, Harry would has died in the first book. Contrary to some people's opinions, I do actually enjoy the movie series. I think Emma Watson did a great job portraying Hermione. Now, I do like the books better (as every good reader does...except when the movie comes before the book...but that's just weird). I've read the Harry Potter series four times...and counting. They never get old!
“Now if you two don’t mind, I’m going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed - or worse, expelled.” -Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
1. Brynna (Brinnie) Lane
Okay, number 1 took me a VERY long time to decide on. I did a lot of research, and went down a million rabbit holes, but Brinnie just kept popping back into my head like, "Hello? I'm right here, ya know."
Sorry, Brinnie. You don't get enough recognition. She is the protagonist of the Wraithwood Trilogy, one of my favorite trilogies. You will heard a lot about the Wraithwood Trilogy, Alyssa Roat (in fact, you already have- check out my March post), and Brinnie Lane. Alyssa Roat spins a wonderful tale of myth, legend, and magic- one that will leave you wanting more! I finished the second book, Mordizan, before the third one came out and it was very hard to wait. They are just so good!
Brinnie shares character traits with some iconic female characters of the past. She is eternally curious, which reminds me a lot of Alice from Alice in Wonderland (great book by the way, you should read it if you haven't already :) This girl is so brave too, like, some of the things she does? Girl, you are just phenomenal! This quote from Alyssa Roat's blurb on her website (https://alyssawrote.com/wraithwood/) explains Brinnie so well: "In the midst of court intrigue, battle, ominous new depths to her power, and searching for Mordred’s bane, Brinnie struggles to draw the lines. How far is she willing to go to destroy Mordred? And how much of herself is she willing to give up along the way?"
I know I already talked about how amazing Alyssa Roat is in my favorite authors post, but still. Her writing is absolutely amazing! I have laughed, and cried, and sat silently in wonder at these books. 100% recommend!
"If I can't be a good hero; then I'll be the villain you all think I am. And nothing and no one can stand between me and my vengeance." -Brinnie Lane, Castelon
