Unfortunately, the new school year is right around the corner. Summer flies by so fast, doesn’t it? I’ve never minded summer work, to be completely honest. Usually we have a math packet, an English assignment, and a summer reading book. This year, I had three summer reading books, a textbook assignment, and an English assignment. So…I’ve been busy. But I thought it’d be interesting to do a post about my summer reading books! Some of which I did enjoy (I’ll save the best for last…per usual ;)
1. Almost Home: A Novel by Valerie Fraser Luesse
I enjoyed this one, it was cute. It was my beach read, so I finished it in less than two days, leaving me with my nonfiction book to read for the rest of the trip (not fun). It’s a little book about some families who all end up a a boarding house during WWII. There’s some romance, some adventure. Unfortunately, there wasn’t really any plot, and it’s not a book I would’ve picked up outside of school, but it was sweet and wholesome and had a cute ending. I’ve never given ratings before, but I will for these three. I’d give this one a 2.7/5.
2. Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond
This one was for my AP History class, so it’s nonfiction and really really really long. It was hard to get through, and the process wasn’t very enjoyable, but I’m answering questions about it now and I’m appreciating it a bit more now that I’ve finished it. It’s kind of a study of how the Europeans came to conquer most of the world, rather than other people groups who had an arguable “head start”. Again, it’s not a book I would’ve picked willingly, but I do feel much smarter having read it ;). 1.5/5
3. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
My absolute favorite!! I’m sure I would have read this one eventually had it not been for school, but it was sooooo good. I highlight my summer reading books as I go, and I enjoyed being able to appreciate some of the beautiful quotes in this novel. It was a moving and sentimental story of two sisters in France during WWII and the Nazi occupation. I laughed, I cried, I did everything in between, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout it. 100% recommend this one!! 5/5
Well, y’all, back to school already. Way too soon, but so goes life. Whether you start this month or the next, I wish yall all the luck!
