Welcome to another author spotlight! My November post was all about Kate Milford, and now I'm going to be reviewing books by Ted Dekker. He and his daughter, Rachelle Dekker, are both authors, so be sure to check out her too!

1. The Girl Behind the Red Rope

The Girl Behind the Red Rope is by both Ted and Rachelle Dekker, and it was the first of their books that I read. It is a really cool dystopian-type novel about a group of people confined to hills of Tennessee, forbidden from venturing beyond the red rope for fear of a great evil. There is a really beautiful underlying message of faith and hope, highlighting Christianity in a really cool way.
“the very idea of living without fear was like trying to live without truth.” -The Girl Behind the Red Rope

2. Nine

Nine is by Rachelle Dekker, but I'm including it on here because a) it's really good, and b) is a kind-of sequel to The Girl Behind the Red Rope. I can't say exactly how it's a kind-of sequel...you'll have to read the books to find out. But definitely read The Girl Behind the Red Rope first. This book is action-packed, and I enjoy a good book where people lose their memories (cough Heroes of Olympus cough). Plus, there are government agencies involved, and who doesn't love those guys?
"...wasn't everyone just a product of their own personal programming?" -Nine

3. Blink of an Eye

I was a bit skeptical about this one after reading The Girl Behind the Red Rope, because it's marketed as "romantic thriller", with "love changes everything" on the cover. So what I thought was, how could a guy who writes thrillers and dystopian novels pull off a romance? I was wrong. This book is fast-paced, intriguing, and spellbinding from start to finish. Who other than an author could bring together, Seth Border, a genius who discovers a gift to see possible futures, and Miriam, a Saudi Arabian princess fleeing from an arranged marriage with a wicked man? The characters are immediately flung out of their normal lives into a world of government agencies and assassins, caught in a manhunt across California. So, I would give it 5 stars, not only because I had low expectations going in and was completely blown away, but also because I could not put it down!
"There's always risk in life's most rewarding pursuits, isn't there?" -Blink of an Eye

4. Play Dead

I'll admit it. I have a thing for thrillers. Horror books, scary stories, murder mysteries, whatever you want to call them, I love it. (Can't watch a horror movie for the life of me though...what's with that?) Play Dead, as suggested by the title, is a murder mystery/science fiction thriller that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Jaw-dropping plot twists, red herrings, a nation on the brink of collapse? Count me in. It starts off with a murder (shocking, right?) and soon a true crime writer starts investigating. And that isn't all. The latest murders are not the only ones, and every one of them is linked to Play Dead, a virtual reality game that is so much like reality that it doesn't feel virtual...
"Our bodies, our relationships, our lives. We're terrified of losing those things because we think they make us who we are. Fear of loss keeps it all in place. Dying means letting go of all of it, our entire life in the world, to know ourselves beyond the images and relationships apparent in this world." -Play Dead

That's all I have for April! Thanks for checking in this month, and see y'all in May (I can't believe it!!)
Love, Alaina
