Hello again, and welcome back! I am officially counting this as my first blog post ever, and also the first in this New Year. I can't believe it's already 2024! This month I am going to share with you 3 books you can read to ring in the New Year. Maybe try something new...a different genre, perhaps?
1. Greenglass House, by Kate Milford
Kate Milford is one of my all time favorite authors. I have probably read this book a million times! (Well, not that many, but you know what I mean.) You know when you read a book, and you get this warm, cozy feeling inside? That's what this book is for me. It's a mystery with a twist of folklore, and the kind of story that you just immediately get transported to. The setting is a charming city called Nagspeake, and the main character is a relatable boy named Milo. It takes place during the winter, which is why it is a perfect read for January. If you've enjoyed books like The Mysterious Benedict Society (Trenton Lee Stewart) or The Westing Game (Ellen Raskin), then this book is definitely for you!
“... The thing about attics and basements was, everything in there had once been a treasure to someone.” -Greenglass House
2. Pages and Co.: The Bookwanderers, by Anna James
If you're a bookworm like me, you'll definitely enjoy this testament to book lovers everywhere. This book is part of a series, but to be honest, I have only read this one. Don't get me wrong, it was SO good! I just have a very long to-read list, and I haven't gotten to the rest of the Pages and Co. series yet. If you like this one, go ahead and read the rest! I'd love for you to tell me how they are.
The setting is a massive bookshop called Pages and Co. (in London, might I add?) so right off the bat this book speaks to my heart! Tilly Pages is an amazing character, and relates to everyone who would love to meet characters right out of their favorite books. If you liked Greenglass House (see above), then you might enjoy this one too!
“I guess a book about a nice safe place where nothing happens would be kind of boring and no one would read it.” -The Bookwanderers
3. The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, by Karina Yan Glaser
This book is also part of a series, and is a cozy read if you're looking for some realistic fiction. This book is a relatively short read, along with the others in the series, but it is a heartwarming story about a family of seven living in Harlem, New York. The kids, Oliver, Hyacinth, Laney, Jessie, and Isa, work together to solve problems so they can a happy family- we all know that sometimes something goes wrong, am I right? But in the end, it all works itself out. This is a good series to read with younger siblings, or if you just want to read something short in between, say, The Lord of the Rings and War & Peace. You need a brain break from those once in a while!
“It takes a super brave person to be as generous as you are, Hyacinth. Not many people are brave enough to be so loving.” -The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street
That's all I have for you today! I hope you enjoy these books, and I will be back next month with some more novel recommendations for Valentines Day (mmm, romance). Have a happy New Year!
